National Indigenous History Month at Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump

Sunday, June 21

National Indigenous Peoples Day

On this day of recognition and reflection, we honour the history, culture, and living traditions of the Plains Blackfoot people.

Guests are invited to gather with us for a day of Blackfoot drumming and dancing, and to spend time with our storytellers, singers, drummers, and dancers as they share teachings, songs, and cultural knowledge passed down through generations.

Throughout the day, visitors may also take part in guided tours and special interpretive programs that highlight the deep connection between the Blackfoot people, the land, and our shared history.

Wednesday June 24

Special Guests: Provincial Archives of Alberta and the Alberta Birds of Prey Display

Visitors can stop by to learn more about the Provincial Archives of Alberta (PAA) and their role in acquiring, preserving, and providing access to archival records that document Alberta’s past including historic photographs, maps, documents and more. PAA staff will be available to answer questions about the archival collections and how to access records both in person and online.  We will highlight the Indigenous Resource Guide which identifies records that relate to Indigenous peoples and communities of Alberta. These records include those created by both government departments and private individuals and organizations. Visitors can also view copies of a selection of archival photographs that will be on display. We invite you to discover archives and how the Provincial Archives can support your research journey.

Stop by and visit our special guests from the Alberta Birds of Prey Centre, Canada’s largest birds of prey conservation facility, during their special mobile presentation at Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump.

Guests will have the opportunity to meet Sarah the Golden Eagle and her feathered companions up close while learning about the important role these powerful birds hold within the natural world and Indigenous teachings.

This engaging presentation will offer visitors a rare opportunity to experience the beauty, strength, and presence of these remarkable birds in an intimate and memorable setting.

The day will also include guided facility tours and special interpretive programming throughout the site.

Program note: Food vendor available on site for both event days
